Progress has been made ...

Planter pots are in the process of being made but production has been halted due to kiln repair issues. The idea to create these came from lack of places to plant the "orphan plants" and it was suggested to hold a fundraiser. Students can create unique pots and then plant the succulents from the greenhouse in them. Hopefully we will have enough plants donated come spring time.

Assessing the Current Situation

Assessing the Current Situation...

Currently the following connections have been made:
  • Greenhouse access
  • cross-curricular learning between art and science/horticulture
  • community service opportunities and outreach

The following connections will be made in the near future (before May 2017):
  • Lubbock High School Art Club outreach with community garden (photos below)
  • Possibility of outreach co-op with Horticulture Club, Art Club and surrounding elementary schools:  2 schools already have gardens but are in need of help. The idea is to involve the elementary students in planting and maintaining
  • education on food sourcing
  • Ceramic students will make pots to sell succulents that the greenhouse students have grown
  • clean up and addition of current art in the garden: students will help contribute their painted rocks to the installation
  • permission to create an art installation or sculpture for the garden

MISSION STATEMENT : Greenhouse Gang

THE GREEN HOUSE GANG MISSION STATEMENT:

Growing Together

This continuing project was designed to provide growth for Lubbock High School, the community, and all of the individuals involved. The primary goal is to grow in some fashion or another. Hardwork, respect, and sense of belonging will be cultivated. This is a collaborative effort involving a few teachers, art club students, and horticulture students at Lubbock High School. Not only will food and plants grow, so will minds.
(The Greenhouse Gang name was voted in by students)

Growing Ideas...

The science class the horticulture class meets in. The greenhouse is connected to the room for direct entry.

It is wonderful to see science and art meet. I was able to visit and observe the horticulture class to get a glimpse of what the students were learning. After their lecture I was able to visit with students in the greenhouse and talk to them about the "art of planting". Some students were also art students so it was great to see the connections they made.

A slide from the horticulture lecture of the day. There was discussion on minerals and elements found in plants.

I was in awe on how captivated the students were. I give major praise to the horticulture teacher as well because she has a lot of passion for what she teaches. A slow collection of plants has began from donors. Some teachers have brought in their "sick" plants so that students can try to revive them and make them healthy again. My art students have made planter pots in ceramic class to help with planting in the greenhouse. Smaller ones are needed currently so that is what we will start making next.

In the spring, students will plant in these areas. Some have already discussed which seeds they want to purchase. Some views of the garden area:
